What to Do After Landing at Istanbul Airport: Step-by-Step Arrival Guide (2026)
What happens between stepping off the plane and reaching your hotel door at Istanbul Airport? The terminal, baggage, the meeting point, public transport, travel times and peak hours, all in one guide.

Quick answer: After landing at Istanbul Airport (IST), you go through passport control, collect your luggage and pass through customs into the arrivals hall. If you have pre-booked a private transfer, your driver will be waiting for you in this hall with a sign showing your name. The drive takes about 44 minutes to Taksim, 48 minutes to Sultanahmet, 46 minutes to Besiktas and around 58 minutes to Kadikoy.

Which terminal will you arrive at?

At Istanbul Airport, domestic and international flights share one terminal building, so there is no risk of going to the wrong terminal: whether you fly in from abroad or from within Turkey, you arrive at the same building. The airport is on the European side of the city, in Arnavutkoy. Istanbul's other airport, Sabiha Gokcen (SAW), is on the Asian side, about 78 km away. Always check which airport is printed on your ticket.

Step 1: Passport control

If you are arriving from abroad, your first stop is passport control. Istanbul Airport is very large, so expect a long walk from the aircraft to the passport desks. Keeping your passport and, if required, your visa at hand speeds things up.

Step 2: Baggage claim

After passport control you enter the baggage hall. Check the screens for the belt number shown next to your flight number. If your luggage is missing or damaged, go to your airline's Lost & Found desk before leaving the hall; you may not be able to come back in once you have exited.

Step 3: Meeting your driver in the arrivals hall

Once you have your luggage, you pass through customs into the arrivals hall. Your Vixride driver waits for you there with a Vixride sign showing your name.

  • Flight tracking: Your flight is tracked live. If it is delayed, the pickup time is updated automatically at no extra charge.
  • Free waiting: You get 60 minutes of free waiting time from landing, so there is no need to rush even if the passport or baggage queues are long.
  • Driver details: Your driver's phone number, the vehicle's licence plate and the exact meeting point are sent to you by WhatsApp before landing. If you cannot spot the sign in the crowd, you can call your driver directly.

Step 4: Travel times to your hotel

Approximate distances and drive times from Istanbul Airport to popular districts:

District Distance Approx. time
Sisli 39 km 41 minutes
Taksim 42 km 44 minutes
Besiktas 44 km 46 minutes
Sultanahmet 46 km 48 minutes
Kadikoy 55 km 58 minutes

Times are for normal traffic. With a private transfer the price is per vehicle and does not change with traffic; bridge, tunnel, motorway and parking fees are included.

How do you get to the city by public transport?

  • Havaist buses: They leave from the terminal's arrivals level and run 24 hours. Payment is by İstanbulkart or credit card. As of September 2026, the Taksim line costs 470 TL per person and takes about 90 minutes; the Kadikoy line costs 515 TL per person and takes about 120 minutes.
  • M11 metro line: It runs to Kagithane (change to the M7) and Gayrettepe (change to the M2 and the Metrobus). Since 20 June 2026 it has run all the way through to Halkali.

Buses and the metro stop at fixed stations, so you will usually need to change or walk with your luggage to reach your hotel. Because bus fares are per person, the total for a family of 3–4 can exceed the price of a private transfer, which is charged per vehicle.

Which days and times are busiest?

Istanbul traffic is heaviest on weekdays from 07:30 to 09:30 and from 17:30 to 19:30, and Friday evenings are the busiest time of the week. For your return, we recommend leaving your hotel at least 3 hours before an international flight and at least 2 hours before a domestic flight.

Which vehicle suits your group?

  • Economy Sedan (Mercedes E-Class): Up to 3 passengers and 2 large suitcases.
  • FirstClass Van (Mercedes Vito): Up to 6 passengers and 6 large suitcases. The most popular choice for families.
  • Vip Sprinter (Mercedes Sprinter): Groups of 7 to 16 passengers and 16 large suitcases.

If you need a baby or child seat, just give the children's ages when booking; suitable seats are fitted in the vehicle free of charge.
