How can we fit a pottery workshop into our visit to Avanos?
Avanos has been known for centuries for pottery made from the red clay of the Kızılırmak river, and the town has many workshops where you can watch potters at the wheel. Many also let visitors try the wheel themselves; what is offered varies from place to place, and buying anything is entirely up to you. The driver waits outside, and any fragile pieces you buy travel safely in the car.
Is it worth spending time by the river in Avanos for a walk and lunch?
Yes. The Kızılırmak, the longest river flowing entirely within Turkey, runs through the middle of Avanos; the pedestrian suspension bridge and the riverside tea gardens make for a pleasant break. You can wander among the old stone houses on the slope above the river, then have lunch at one of the restaurants along the bank. The driver waits in the centre, so heading on to nearby Paşabağ or Zelve after lunch is easy.
Can we go to an evening whirling dervish ceremony at Sarıhan near Avanos?
Yes. Sarıhan, just outside Avanos, is a restored caravanserai from the Seljuk era, where evening sema (whirling dervish) performances are held. Tickets are bought separately from the organiser and are not included in the price. The driver takes you there, waits until the end and then drives you back to your hotel; if you pass by during the day, you can also admire the caravanserai's carved stone gateway in daylight.
Is there a quieter underground city we can visit near Avanos?
Yes. The Özkonak underground city, north of Avanos, is usually less crowded than Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı and makes a good alternative if you would rather not head south to the big ones. The tunnels here are narrow and low too, and you can see up close the large rolling stones once used to seal the entrances. The driver waits at the entrance, and afterwards you can head back into Avanos for lunch or a pottery workshop.
When and how do we pay, and what if our plans change?
Nothing is paid in advance: you pay the driver in the car, in cash (EUR, USD, GBP or TRY) or by card. The price is per vehicle, not per person. If your plans change, you can modify or cancel the booking free of charge up to 24 hours before the start.
