Nevşehir (NAV) or Kayseri (ASR): Which Airport for Cappadocia? Distances, Prices and Flights (2026)
Short answer: Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport (NAV) is the closer airport: Göreme is 40 km and about 40 minutes away, against 74 km and about 65 minutes from Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR). A private transfer to Göreme costs €45 from NAV and €70 from ASR. ASR usually has more flights and more airlines, including seasonal international flights, so it can still work out cheaper overall. Choose NAV if you've found a good flight; choose ASR if its flights save you more than the extra transfer cost, which is easiest in Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa where the gap is small, or if you're going skiing on Erciyes.
No airport sits in the valleys themselves. The fairy-chimney villages lie between two: NAV to the north-west and ASR to the east, near the city of Kayseri. Both have flights from Istanbul, and Vixride drives to the same villages from either one. The choice comes down to three things: your flight, where you're staying, and the size of your group.

What the numbers show
- For Göreme, Uçhisar, Avanos and Çavuşin, NAV saves 20–35 minutes of driving and €15–30 per sedan (€30–35 per van).
- For Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa, on the eastern side of the valleys, NAV is still closer, but the time gap is the smallest: about 15 minutes, and €5–20 per sedan. If ASR has the better flight, it's a perfectly good choice here.
- For the underground cities and the Ihlara Valley, to the south, NAV is clearly better: around 40–50 minutes shorter and €35–55 cheaper per sedan.
- For Kayseri city and Erciyes ski resort, only ASR makes sense: the city centre is 7 km away (about 15 minutes) and Erciyes 30 km (about 35 minutes).
The calculation that decides it: flight plus transfer
An airport that's further away can still be the cheaper choice if the flight costs less. Compare the total for your group:
- Travelling alone: the transfer to Göreme costs €25 more from ASR. If the ASR flight is more than €25 cheaper, ASR wins on price.
- A couple: the €25 difference is €12.50 per person.
- A family or group of six in a van: €55 from NAV against €85 from ASR, so €30 in total, or €5 per person. Even a small difference in airfares can make ASR the cheaper option.
Then weigh the time. On arrival day, an extra 25 minutes in the car matters more with small children or after an early start than on a relaxed afternoon.
Choose NAV if…
- you're staying in Göreme, Uçhisar, Avanos, Çavuşin or Ortahisar and found a reasonable flight;
- you plan to visit Kaymaklı, Derinkuyu or the Ihlara Valley;
- you're travelling alone or as a couple, where the transfer saving counts for more per person;
- you want the shortest possible drive after a long journey.
Choose ASR if…
- it has a direct or better-timed flight from your city;
- the airfare saving is larger than the transfer difference for your group;
- you're staying in Ürgüp or Mustafapaşa, where the extra drive is only about 15 minutes;
- you're combining Cappadocia with Kayseri city or a ski trip to Erciyes.
Arriving: where your driver meets you
At NAV, the terminal is small and has a single arrivals exit, so it's only a few steps from the baggage belt to your driver. Our step-by-step NAV arrival guide covers the details.
At ASR, domestic and international flights use the same terminal. After baggage claim, and passport control if you're arriving from abroad, walk out through the arrivals exit.
At both airports, your driver waits at the exit with a Vixride sign showing your name, follows your flight's actual landing time and waits 60 minutes free of charge after landing. The driver's name and phone number reach you by WhatsApp before pickup.
Winter travel
Cappadocia lies high on the Anatolian plateau, and snow and ice are possible between December and March on the roads from both airports. Allow extra time for your return trip in winter; drivers know these roads and adjust their speed. Inside Kayseri, weekday rush hours (about 07:30–09:00 and 17:00–18:30) can add time to transfers from ASR.
Flying in to one airport and out of the other
This often makes sense: arrive at whichever airport has the better inbound flight and leave from the other. Each transfer is booked separately, so you can book an arrival from ASR and a return to NAV, or the other way round.
