What to Do After Landing at Cappadocia Airport: A Step-by-Step, Area-by-Area Nevşehir (NAV) Arrival Guide (2026)
Every step at Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport, from the moment you leave the plane to the door of your cave hotel: the single exit, meeting your driver, connecting in Istanbul, 60 minutes of free waiting, drive times to 11 destinations, planning a balloon morning and a comparison with Kayseri.

Quick answer: Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport (NAV) is a small, single-terminal airport north-west of Nevşehir, near Tuzköy and Gülşehir. Once you have collected your luggage, it is only a few steps to the single arrivals exit; if you have booked a private transfer, your driver waits for you here with a Vixride sign showing your name. Your flight is tracked, and the driver waits free of charge for 60 minutes from the actual landing time. The drive takes about 35 minutes to Uçhisar, 40 to Göreme, 45 to Ürgüp and 55 to Derinkuyu.

Before your flight: booking and connections via Istanbul

Your booking is confirmed by the confirmation voucher sent to you by email or WhatsApp; names, flight numbers, pickup and drop-off points and contact details must be accurate and complete. Each transfer is booked separately, so you can book just the arrival transfer and plan the rest of your trip as you like.

Which flight number should you enter? Most services into NAV depart from Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). If you are flying with a connection, give the number of your Istanbul–Nevşehir flight, the one that lands at NAV, in your booking; Vixride tracks the actual landing time of this flight. If you miss the connection and are rebooked onto another flight, simply send the new flight number.

Booking for someone else: If your parents or guests are travelling without you, make the booking with their names, their flight number and a phone number they will have with them; the driver's name and phone number are sent to this number by WhatsApp, and the passengers pay in the vehicle.

Keep the following to hand:

  • Your booking reference: You quote it in messages about changes and cancellations.
  • The full name of your hotel: The driver knows where to go, and if needed, the hotel can also call the driver with directions.
  • Support: 24/7 support by WhatsApp and phone on +90 553 537 33 61 in Turkish, English, German, French and Russian; email: info@vixride.com.

You can book up to 2 hours before pickup; in busy holiday periods, we recommend booking 24–48 hours in advance to get the vehicle you want.

Leaving the terminal and meeting your driver

In NAV's small terminal, it is a short walk from the baggage belt to the arrivals exit; as there is only one exit, it is almost impossible for you and your driver to miss each other.

  1. Baggage claim: You collect your luggage and walk to the arrivals exit.
  2. Meet & greet with a name sign: At the exit, the driver waits with a Vixride sign showing your name, helps with your suitcases and takes you to the vehicle.
  3. Direct ride: The vehicle is reserved for you alone; no other passengers are picked up and no stops are made at other hotels.

Before pickup, the driver's name and phone number, the vehicle's licence plate and the exact meeting point are sent to you by WhatsApp.

If you can't find your driver: Call the driver on the number in the message, or message or call +90 553 537 33 61 on WhatsApp; the operations team will connect you with your driver.

Flight tracking, delays, cancellations and 60 minutes of free waiting

Using the flight number in your booking, the driver tracks the actual landing time, not the scheduled time; even if your flight is delayed by several hours, the pickup is adjusted accordingly.

Situation What should you do?
The plane lands early or late Nothing; you don't need to report a delay, and no extra charge is made
You missed your connection and were rebooked onto a new flight Send the new flight number
Your flight was cancelled or moved to another day Let Vixride know, quoting your booking reference
You couldn't reach the exit within 60 minutes of the actual landing The transfer counts as a No Show and the driver may leave; no charge is made

Night landings: Vixride operates 24/7 and there is no night rate. If you are arriving late, let your hotel know that you will check in late so that someone is at reception.

Groups arriving on two separate flights: The driver tracks one flight and counts the free waiting time from when it lands, so book a separate transfer for each flight. If the flights land close together, you can book a single transfer for the later flight and have the first arrivals wait.

Distances and drive times from Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport to 11 destinations

Every route starts on the airport road towards Gülşehir. Routes heading south and east take the Gülşehir–Nevşehir road down into Nevşehir, while Avanos and Çavuşin are reached on the Gülşehir–Avanos road along the Kızılırmak.

Destination From NAV Main route from NAV For comparison: from ASR
Nevşehir city centre 29 km, 30 min Gülşehir–Nevşehir road 82 km, 70 min
Avanos 35 km, 40 min Gülşehir–Avanos road 68 km, 60 min
Uçhisar 36 km, 35 min Nevşehir, then the D302 77 km, 70 min
Çavuşin 37 km, 40 min Gülşehir–Avanos road 70 km, 60 min
Göreme 40 km, 40 min Nevşehir, then the D302 74 km, 65 min
Ortahisar 43 km, 40 min Nevşehir, then the D302 74 km, 65 min
Ürgüp 48 km, 45 min Nevşehir, then the D302 68 km, 60 min
Kaymaklı 49 km, 45 min Nevşehir, then the D765 102 km, 85 min
Mustafapaşa 54 km, 50 min The D302 to Ürgüp, then the Mustafapaşa road 74 km, 65 min
Derinkuyu 59 km, 55 min Nevşehir, then the D765 112 km, 95 min
Ihlara Valley 90 km, 80 min Derinkuyu, then the Güzelyurt road 150 km, 130 min

The times are approximate; the ASR times assume normal traffic and dry roads.

Winter and busy periods: Allow a little more time in these periods. Cappadocia lies high on the Anatolian plateau, and snow and ice are possible between December and March; drivers know these roads well and adjust their speed. Vixride is not liable for delays, missed flights or losses caused by force majeure, such as severe weather, road traffic accidents, closed roads or strikes.

Uçhisar and Göreme: arriving in the fairy-chimney villages

Uçhisar (36 km, about 35 minutes): From Nevşehir, you head east on the D302; Uçhisar Castle appears on the skyline, and you turn into the village before reaching Göreme. The castle is open to visitors for an entrance fee. The castle rock and the village terraces are good places to watch the sun set over Pigeon Valley and Göreme; in winter, the sun sets much earlier.

Göreme (40 km, about 40 minutes): Past Uçhisar, the same road opens onto a panorama of the Göreme valley before dropping down into the village. As the drive is short, someone landing at midday can spend most of the afternoon exploring: Love Valley and the Pigeon Valley trail start at the edge of the village, and the Göreme Open Air Museum is just outside it. From the viewpoints above Göreme, you can watch the valleys change colour as the sun goes down.

Which should you choose? Uçhisar is quieter and, being higher, offers wide views; in Göreme, restaurants, tour agencies and trailheads are within walking distance. As the two villages are close, it is easy to get from one to the other.

Cave hotels: Vehicles cannot enter the narrow, steep lanes of some cave hotels in Göreme and Uçhisar; the vehicle stops at the nearest point and the driver helps carry your suitcases.

Çavuşin and Avanos: the Kızılırmak road

The road to these two places doesn't normally enter Nevşehir city centre; after Gülşehir, a quiet riverside road follows the Kızılırmak valley to Avanos.

Avanos (35 km, about 40 minutes): In this pottery town on the Kızılırmak, hotels are spread across both banks of the river; entering the full name and address of your hotel helps the driver cross to the right bank and stop close to the door. Many of the pottery workshops in the centre let you sit at the wheel, and a suspension footbridge crosses to the far bank of the river.

Çavuşin (37 km, about 40 minutes): The road passes through Avanos; turning towards Göreme, you soon reach Çavuşin and its old houses carved into the rock. Some cave guesthouses on the hillside of old Çavuşin cannot be reached by car; the driver stops at the nearest point and helps carry your bags. As the village has only a few small hotels and guesthouses, evenings are quiet; Göreme and Avanos are a short drive away for restaurants.

Arriving in Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa

The roads to all three head east from Nevşehir on the D302 but leave the main road at different points. For Ortahisar, you leave the main road after the Uçhisar turn-off; Ürgüp lies further along the D302, beyond the Ortahisar turn-off; and for Mustafapaşa, you pass through Ürgüp and head south.

Ortahisar (43 km, about 40 minutes): After leaving the main road, you drop down into the village, which sits in a hollow below its castle; the last stretch runs through narrow village streets, so the pace slows. Many guesthouses are in restored stone houses on lanes too narrow or steep for a car; the driver stops at the nearest point and helps carry your suitcases. The centre is compact: the square at the foot of the castle, a few cafés and family-run restaurants are all within a short walk.

Ürgüp (48 km, about 45 minutes): The last stretch of the road runs through fairy-chimney country. Some cave hotels can only be reached on foot for the last few metres; the driver parks at the nearest point and helps carry the suitcases. For a view over the town from above, you can climb Temenni Hill.

Mustafapaşa (54 km, about 50 minutes): Seen from NAV, it lies on the far, south-eastern edge of the tourist area. Its former name is Sinasos, and many hotels still use it. There are a few cafés on the village square, and many mansion hotels serve dinner in vaulted rooms. The last stretch south of Ürgüp is a smaller road, so in winter allow more time on snowy days.

Arriving in Nevşehir city centre

Nevşehir city centre (29 km, about 30 minutes) is one of the shortest and simplest transfers from NAV: after Gülşehir, you head south on the Gülşehir–Nevşehir road into the city. The transfer can end at any address in the city, including the intercity bus station.

The Kurşunlu Mosque in the Damat İbrahim Paşa complex and the hilltop Nevşehir Castle are the city's main sights. City hotels are an alternative to cave hotels; Uçhisar and Göreme lie just to the east along the D302.

Heading south: Kaymaklı, Derinkuyu and the Ihlara Valley

The southern routes leave Nevşehir on the D765 Niğde road.

Kaymaklı (49 km, about 45 minutes): This is the first of the two famous underground cities on the Niğde road. If you land in the morning or around midday, it is usually possible to fit a first visit into your arrival day: either drop your suitcases at the hotel first or book an hourly driver who keeps your luggage in the vehicle.

Derinkuyu (59 km, about 55 minutes): Shortly before Derinkuyu, the road passes through Kaymaklı; the standard transfer doesn't stop there. If you are spending the night in the village, give the name of your guesthouse and the driver will take you to its door. Pushchairs cannot be taken into the underground city; bring flat shoes with good grip and a light layer. Most visitors spend about an hour on the marked route; as tour groups arrive from late morning onwards, visiting early or later in the afternoon is usually calmer. As Derinkuyu lies high on the plateau, snow and ice are possible in winter.

Ihlara Valley (90 km, about 80 minutes): The valley is in the neighbouring province of Aksaray, which has no airport of its own. At Derinkuyu, the route turns onto the Derinkuyu–Güzelyurt road. Accommodation is limited to a handful of pensions in Ihlara, Belisırma and Selime and the stone guesthouses of Güzelyurt; as addresses are not always easy to find, give the exact name. Arriving before dark lets you see the canyon country and settle in; as the transfer tracks your flight, a late landing is no problem either.

A day trip to Ihlara: Many travellers keep their hotel in Göreme or Uçhisar and visit Ihlara, often together with Derinkuyu, with an hourly driver. The driver drops you at the main stairway near Ihlara village and meets you at Belisırma or Selime at the time you agree. The stretch from the main stairway to Belisırma is an easy riverside walk of a few hours; continuing to Selime makes it a full-day hike.

Planning your arrival for a balloon morning

Balloons take off around sunrise, and companies collect guests from their hotels before dawn, which is why most travellers land the day before. Flights also depend on the wind, so many people keep a second morning free as a back-up. The balloon flight is booked separately from the transfer, with a balloon company.

  • Göreme: It is the centre of balloon flights; as the drive is short, even an evening landing leaves time for an early night before the dawn pickup.
  • Uçhisar: In the early morning, you can see balloons drifting over the valleys towards Göreme from the village terraces.
  • Ortahisar: On most calm mornings, balloons float over the valleys around the village, and many guesthouse terraces face them; if you are flying yourself, land at NAV the day before.
  • Ürgüp: Landing at NAV the evening before gives you time to check in, have dinner and sleep before the very early hotel pickup.
  • Avanos: Most companies also pick up from hotels in Avanos; as launch sites are usually around Göreme, the pickup may be a little earlier.
  • Derinkuyu: Balloon pickups usually cover the central villages around Göreme; before booking, ask the company whether it picks up from your hotel.

Comparison with Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)

Kayseri Erkilet Airport is the eastern gateway to Cappadocia; domestic and international flights use the same terminal. After baggage claim, and passport control if you are arriving from abroad, you walk to the arrivals exit; the driver waits there with a Vixride sign showing your name, and the 60 minutes of free waiting applies here too.

The road leads from Kayseri's northern ring road onto the D300 Kayseri–Nevşehir highway and crosses the plain westwards, with Mount Erciyes in view. For Göreme, Uçhisar, Çavuşin and Avanos, it leaves the D300 at the Avanos/Çavuşin junction; for Ürgüp, Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa, it heads south on the D302 into Ürgüp. The distances and times are in the ASR column of the table above.

  • NAV for the shortest drive: It is the closest airport to the villages, but it has fewer flights, most of them from Istanbul.
  • ASR for more flights: Kayseri usually has more flights, and you are more likely to be able to fly in from abroad without a connection; the trade-off is a longer drive. Kayseri makes sense if it offers a direct international flight, a better departure time or a lower fare.
  • Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa: These lie on the side facing Kayseri, so the difference narrows and flight times and fares become the deciding factor.
  • Skiing: Erciyes Ski Resort is 30 km, about 35 minutes, from ASR. List ski and snowboard bags in your booking; most guests arriving with several ski bags choose a FirstClass Van.

Compare both timetables before you buy tickets; Vixride operates from both airports at fixed prices. Details are on our Kayseri Airport transfer page.

Choosing a vehicle and child seats

Choose the vehicle by the number of suitcases as well as the number of passengers.

Vehicle Max. passengers Max. luggage
Economy Sedan (Mercedes E-Class) 3 2 large suitcases
FirstClass Van (Mercedes Vito) 6 6 suitcases; suitable for a family of five
Vip Sprinter (Mercedes Sprinter) 16 16 suitcases; more than one vehicle for larger groups
  • Luggage: There is no charge for luggage. If your luggage doesn't fit in the vehicle, a larger vehicle may be needed; that class's listed price then applies, and this is confirmed with you first.
  • Large items: Golf bags, pushchairs and foldable wheelchairs fit in the FirstClass Van and the Vip Sprinter.
  • Child seats: They are free of charge on airport transfers; request one when booking or via WhatsApp and give your child's age.

Price, payment, cancellation and hourly chauffeur hire

  • Fixed price per vehicle: The price is per vehicle, not per person. VAT, motorway and bridge tolls, airport parking and time spent in traffic are included; there is no taximeter, and neither roadworks nor waiting within the free time changes the amount.
  • Villages and addresses not on the list: If you are staying in a village near Ürgüp, such as Ayvalı, choose that village as your destination or enter the full address of your hotel; the route and price are set accordingly. For an address that is not on the list, the price is calculated from the distance; you still see a single fixed amount, and nothing is added on the day.
  • When does the price change? Only if you ask for a different address or an extra drop-off during the journey; the driver confirms the difference with you first.
  • Payment in the vehicle: No payment is taken in advance; at the end of the journey, you pay in cash (euros, US dollars, pounds sterling or Turkish lira) or by card. If you are not satisfied, you can choose not to pay.
  • Cancellation and changes: These are always free of charge; as nothing is paid in advance, there is nothing to refund either. We kindly ask you to let us know via WhatsApp, quoting your booking reference, at least 24 hours in advance so that the vehicle can be reassigned.

Hourly chauffeur hire: You can book a driver in packages of several hours; you choose the stops, the vehicle waits at each one and at the end it drops you back at your hotel. Near the airport, Gülşehir holds the rock-cut complex of Açıksaray and the Church of St John (Karşı Kilise) with its 13th-century frescoes; as the transfer goes directly to your hotel, book an hourly driver from the airport if you would like to see them first. If you are splitting your stay between villages, book the arrival transfer to your first hotel, for example in Göreme; to move between villages with your suitcases, you can hire a driver by the hour and add a few stops. On hourly hire, there is a charge for child seats. Details are on our Cappadocia chauffeur hire page.

Step-by-step worked examples

The times are examples only; the times at which you reach the exit are assumptions, and the drive times are counted from the moment you get into the vehicle.

Example 1: A couple who miss their connection, heading to Uçhisar. Two people are travelling via Istanbul with 2 large suitcases; their hotel is a cave hotel on a narrow lane, and they have a balloon flight the next morning.

  1. Booking: They choose the Economy Sedan; in the form, they enter the number of the Istanbul–Nevşehir flight due to land at NAV at 18:10.
  2. Missed connection: The couple miss their connection and are rebooked onto a flight due to land at NAV at 21:35; they send the new flight number via WhatsApp.
  3. Waiting: The flight lands 15 minutes late, at 21:50; the free waiting time lasts until 22:50. The couple spot the sign at the exit at 22:10 and are in the vehicle at around 22:20.
  4. The drive: Uçhisar is about 35 minutes away, so the couple are in the village at around 22:55. The vehicle stops at the nearest point, and the driver helps carry the suitcases.

Example 2: A family of five heading to Mustafapaşa. Two adults and three children aged 1, 4 and 9, with 5 suitcases and a pushchair.

  1. Airport: Mustafapaşa is 50 minutes from NAV and 65 from ASR; the family choose the NAV flight whose time suits them.
  2. Vehicle: They choose the FirstClass Van (6 passengers, 6 suitcases) and request three child seats, giving the children's ages.
  3. Meeting: The plane lands at 13:05; the family are at the exit at 13:35, and the free waiting time lasts until 14:05. Once the suitcases and the pushchair are loaded and the children are seated, they set off at around 13:50.
  4. The drive: Via Ürgüp, they reach the hotel in about 50 minutes, at around 14:40.

Example 3: A traveller staying in Derinkuyu. One person with 1 suitcase lands at 10:40.

  1. Transfer: The traveller gets into the vehicle at 11:05 and, after a drive of about 55 minutes, is at the guesthouse at around 12:00.
  2. Visit: After settling into the guesthouse, the traveller visits the underground city later in the afternoon.

Arrival-day checklist
