Hotel to Airport in Istanbul: How Early to Leave for IST and Sabiha Gokcen? (2026)
Avoid the stress of missing your flight on departure day in Istanbul. This guide brings together when to leave Sultanahmet, Taksim, Besiktas and Kadikoy for Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen, plus drive times and peak traffic hours.

Quick answer: As a general rule, when heading from your hotel to the airport in Istanbul, we recommend leaving at least 3 hours before an international flight and at least 2 hours before a domestic flight. If you are staying in Sultanahmet, this rises to 3.5 hours for international and 2.5 hours for domestic flights; from Taksim and Besiktas, 3 hours and 2 hours are enough. From Kadikoy and the Bagdat Avenue area, leave 2–2.5 hours before your flight for Sabiha Gokcen and 3–3.5 hours before for Istanbul Airport. If your departure falls between 07:30 and 09:30 or between 17:30 and 19:30 on a weekday, or on a Friday evening, do not cut the recommended time short; in areas with a range, choose the upper end or leave a little earlier.

Which airport is on your ticket: IST or SAW?

The first step in planning your return in Istanbul is to confirm which airport your flight departs from. The city's two major airports are a long way apart, and on departure day there may not be time to travel between them.

  • Istanbul Airport (IST): On the European side, in Arnavutkoy. Domestic and international flights use a single terminal building.
  • Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW): On the Asian side. Domestic and international flights are in the same terminal building.

The two airports are about 78 km apart, and in normal traffic the drive from Sabiha Gokcen to Istanbul Airport takes about 82 minutes. So always check the airport code on your ticket (IST or SAW). Especially if you arrived in Istanbul at one airport and are flying home from the other, make sure you select the correct airport when booking your return transfer. Since domestic and international flights share the same building at both airports, you do not need to allow for moving between terminals.

When should you leave your hotel, by district?

The times below show the minimum you should allow between leaving your hotel and your flight's departure time. They account not only for the drive but also for city traffic and the extensive security checks at the terminal.

Where you are staying International flight Domestic flight Why this much time
Istanbul in general At least 3 hours At least 2 hours City traffic and airport procedures
Sultanahmet (Old City) 3.5 hours 2.5 hours Old City exit traffic and security checkpoints
Taksim At least 3 hours At least 2 hours City traffic and extensive security screening at the terminal
Besiktas At least 3 hours At least 2 hours Traffic flow on the coast road

A separate rule applies to Kadikoy and Bagdat Avenue. If you are staying on the Asian side, the time depends on which airport you are flying from. If your flight departs from Sabiha Gokcen, leaving your hotel 2–2.5 hours before your flight time is enough. If your flight departs from Istanbul Airport, increase this margin to 3–3.5 hours, as you will be crossing to the European side. Crossing between continents can add an unpredictable amount of time to the journey.

If you are staying in a district not listed in the table, use the time given for Istanbul in general and check the district closest to your hotel in the distance tables below.

Distances and drive times from districts to Istanbul Airport

Of the districts in the table, Sariyer and Sisli are the closest to Istanbul Airport. Travellers coming from districts on the Asian side, such as Uskudar and Kadikoy, have to cross the Bosphorus.

District Distance Approx. drive time (normal traffic)
Sariyer 38 km 40 minutes
Sisli 39 km 41 minutes
Taksim 42 km 44 minutes
Karakoy 43 km 45 minutes
Besiktas 44 km 46 minutes
Bakirkoy 45 km 47 minutes
Sultanahmet 46 km 48 minutes
Uskudar 50 km 53 minutes
Kadikoy 55 km 58 minutes

Distances and drive times from districts to Sabiha Gokcen

Sabiha Gokcen is closer to the districts on the Asian side. From the central districts on the European side, the distance is mostly similar to the distance to Istanbul Airport.

District Distance Approx. drive time (normal traffic)
Pendik 12 km 15 minutes
Maltepe 22 km 23 minutes
Atasehir 25 km 26 minutes
Kadikoy 32 km 34 minutes
Uskudar 33 km 35 minutes
Besiktas 42 km 44 minutes
Taksim 45 km 47 minutes
Sisli 46 km 48 minutes
Sultanahmet 48 km 50 minutes
Bakirkoy 52 km 55 minutes

Comparing the two tables reveals an interesting result: Sultanahmet is 46 km from Istanbul Airport and 48 km from Sabiha Gokcen. In other words, for someone staying in the Old City, both airports are a similar distance away. For those staying in Kadikoy, however, the difference is large: it is 32 km to Sabiha Gokcen and 55 km to Istanbul Airport.

When is Istanbul traffic heaviest, and how should you adjust your departure time?

The times in the tables are for normal traffic. In Istanbul, traffic towards both airports peaks at these times:

  • Weekday mornings: 07:30–09:30
  • Weekday evenings: 17:30–19:30
  • Friday evenings: The busiest time of the week

When setting your departure time, you can follow this approach:

  • If your recommended departure time falls within one of these windows, choose the upper end of the time in the table or set off a little earlier.
  • If you are flying on a Friday afternoon or evening, do not delay your departure; traffic may move more slowly than on other days of the week.
  • In districts with a range, such as Kadikoy (2–2.5 hours or 3–3.5 hours), use the longer end of the range at peak times.
  • Even if you set off outside peak hours, do not cut the recommended minimum time short; it also covers the security checks at the airport.

With a private transfer, traffic only affects your time, not your budget: the price is per vehicle and does not change because of traffic.

Working out your hotel departure time: examples

To find your departure time, simply subtract the recommended time for your district from your flight time. Then check whether that time falls within a peak traffic window.

Example 1 – Friday, Sultanahmet, Istanbul Airport, international, 18:00: The recommendation for international flights from Sultanahmet is 3.5 hours. Subtracting 3.5 hours from 18:00, you need to leave your hotel at 14:30 at the latest. As Friday evening is the busiest time of the week, do not leave any later than this under any circumstances.

Example 2 – Kadikoy, Sabiha Gokcen, domestic, 10:00: The recommendation from Kadikoy to Sabiha Gokcen is 2–2.5 hours. In this case, you should leave your hotel between 07:30 and 08:00. If it is a weekday, your departure falls within the morning peak (07:30–09:30), so choose 07:30.

Example 3 – Bagdat Avenue, Istanbul Airport, international, 13:00: The recommendation from Kadikoy and Bagdat Avenue to Istanbul Airport is 3–3.5 hours. You need to leave your hotel between 09:30 and 10:00. On a weekday, the morning peak lasts until 09:30, so the first part of the journey may be slow; leaving at 09:30 is safer.

Example 4 – Taksim, Istanbul Airport, international, 21:00, weekday: The recommendation for international flights from Taksim is at least 3 hours, so you should set off at 18:00 at the latest. However, this falls within the evening peak (17:30–19:30). Setting off before 17:30, ahead of the evening traffic, gives you extra peace of mind.

How do you book your return transfer?

A transfer from your hotel or any address to the airport is booked the same way as one from the airport to your hotel. When booking, you give your flight time and your pickup address; the pickup time is then agreed based on your flight time.

  • Driver details: Six hours before pickup, your driver's phone number, the vehicle's licence plate and the exact meeting point are sent to you by WhatsApp.
  • When to book: You can book up to 2 hours before pickup. In peak seasons, we recommend booking 24–48 hours in advance.
  • Completely private journey: Only you and your group are in the vehicle; no other passengers are picked up and there are no stops along the way.
  • Round-the-clock service: Transfers run 24/7. You can reach the support team by WhatsApp or phone on +90 553 537 33 61 in Turkish, English, German, French and Russian.

Vixride has provided transfer services at 10 airports in Turkey and North Cyprus since 2021, under TÜRSAB licence no. 14798.

What is included in the price, and how do you pay?

The following rules apply to the price and payment for your return transfer:

  • Fixed price per vehicle: The price is per vehicle, not per person. There is no meter; however heavy the traffic, the price does not change.
  • Tolls included: Motorway, bridge and tunnel tolls, including the Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia Tunnel, are included in the price. Parking fees are included too.
  • No night surcharge: The price you see when booking also applies to flights departing in the early hours or around midnight.
  • Pay in the vehicle: You pay in the vehicle at the end of the journey. Cash in euros, US dollars, pounds sterling or Turkish lira is accepted, as are credit and debit cards. Nothing is charged in advance.
  • Free cancellation and changes: You can cancel or amend free of charge via WhatsApp, quoting your booking reference; please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.

Which vehicle for your return: passengers and luggage

You may have more luggage on the way back than on arrival. Shopping during your holiday can add to your baggage, so take this into account when choosing a vehicle.

  • Economy Sedan (Mercedes E-Class): Up to 3 passengers and 2 large suitcases. Suitable for couples and solo travellers with light luggage.
  • FirstClass Van (Mercedes Vito): Up to 6 passengers and 6 large suitcases. The most popular choice for families.
  • Vip Sprinter (Mercedes Sprinter): For groups of 7 to 16 passengers; up to 16 large suitcases.

If you need a baby or child seat, give the children's ages when booking; seats are free of charge. All vehicles have free Wi-Fi, water and air conditioning.

Can you get to the airport by metro or bus?

  • M11 metro line: It serves Istanbul Airport. You can change to the M7 at Kagithane and to the M2 and the Metrobus at Gayrettepe. Since 20 June 2026, the line has extended to Halkali.
  • Havaist buses: They serve Istanbul Airport and run 24 hours. Payment is by Istanbulkart or credit card.
  • Havabus buses: They serve Sabiha Gokcen. Tickets are sold at the Havabus desk or at havabus.com.

Bus tickets are per person, and the metro and buses serve fixed stops only. This means you have to carry your luggage from your hotel to the stop or station yourself. If you are travelling as a large family or with a lot of luggage, a door-to-door private transfer priced per vehicle is usually more practical.

Departure-day checklist

  1. Recheck in your airline's app whether your ticket says IST or SAW, and confirm your flight time.
  2. Subtract the recommended time for your district from your flight time; if the result falls within a peak traffic window, choose an earlier time.
  3. Check the driver's phone number, licence plate and meeting point sent to you by WhatsApp 6 hours before pickup.
  4. Complete your hotel check-out and settle any payments before the pickup time.
  5. Put your passport, ID, ticket and valuables in your hand luggage.
  6. Bring your suitcases down to the lobby a few minutes before pickup and count them.
  7. Since you pay in the vehicle, have cash or your card with you.
  8. Save the support number, +90 553 537 33 61, on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours before my flight should I leave Sultanahmet for Istanbul Airport? We recommend leaving Sultanahmet 3.5 hours before an international flight and 2.5 hours before a domestic flight. The drive takes about 48 minutes in normal traffic, but Old City exit traffic and security checks call for extra time.

When should I leave Taksim for the airport on my return? Leave Taksim at least 3 hours before an international flight and at least 2 hours before a domestic flight. The drive from Taksim takes about 44 minutes to Istanbul Airport and about 47 minutes to Sabiha Gokcen.

How early do I need to leave Besiktas for the airport? For Besiktas, the recommendation is also at least 3 hours for international flights and at least 2 hours for domestic flights. As traffic on the coast road can lengthen the journey, we advise against cutting this time short.

How many minutes does it take to get from Kadikoy to Sabiha Gokcen? Kadikoy is 32 km from Sabiha Gokcen, and the drive takes about 34 minutes in normal traffic. For Sabiha Gokcen flights from Kadikoy or Bagdat Avenue, leaving your hotel 2–2.5 hours before your flight time is enough.

I am staying in Kadikoy but my flight is from Istanbul Airport. When should I leave? In this case, you will be crossing to the European side, so we recommend setting off 3–3.5 hours before your flight. Kadikoy is 55 km from Istanbul Airport, and the drive takes about 58 minutes in normal traffic.

How many kilometres apart are Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen? The two airports are about 78 km apart, and the drive takes about 82 minutes in normal traffic. Istanbul Airport is on the European side and Sabiha Gokcen is on the Asian side, so always check which airport is on your ticket.

My flight is on a Friday evening. Should I leave earlier? Yes. Istanbul's heaviest traffic of the week is on Friday evenings. Do not cut the recommended time for your district short, choose the upper end in districts with a range, and do not delay your departure. For example, for an 18:00 international flight from Sultanahmet, you should set off at 14:30 at the latest.

When will I receive my driver's details? Six hours before pickup, your driver's phone number, the vehicle's licence plate and the exact meeting point are sent to you by WhatsApp. If there is a problem, you can reach the support team 24/7.

Do I pay the Eurasia Tunnel or bridge tolls separately? No. All motorway, bridge and tunnel tolls, including the Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia Tunnel, as well as parking fees, are included in the price. At the end of the journey, you pay only the amount you saw when booking.

Is a transfer more expensive for a night flight? No, there is no night surcharge. Transfers run 24/7, and the same fixed price applies to flights departing around midnight or in the early hours.

When and how do I pay for my return transfer? You pay in the vehicle at the end of the journey; nothing is charged in advance.
