At a glance
Rock-cut churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar Castle, the fairy chimneys of Paşabağ, Devrent Valley and the potters of Avanos: North Cappadocia by private car, at your own pace. Suggested duration 8 hours; pickup from hotels in Goreme, Cavusin, Uchisar and the rest of the region. Prices start at €320 per vehicle, paid to the driver on the day.
The Red Tour takes its name from the pink and rust-coloured tuff valleys of northern Cappadocia and from the Kızılırmak – the “Red River” – that flows through Avanos. Göreme, Uçhisar, Çavuşin, Paşabağ, Devrent and Avanos lie only 3–10 km apart, so the drives are short and most of the day is spent walking and looking rather than sitting in the car.
On a group tour every stop has a fixed time slot and the programme often includes carpet, onyx or jewellery shops. On a private tour you decide how long to stay in the museum, where to stop for photos and where to have lunch. Add a licensed guide and the frescoes, early Christian monastic life and the volcanic geology are explained on the spot.
The programme takes about eight hours. The price is per vehicle, not per person: a Mercedes Vito (FirstClass Van) for up to 6 guests or a Mercedes Sprinter (Vip Sprinter) for up to 16. Lunch and a guide can be added to the price with one click in the booking form.

What you will see
Stops are shown in a typical order; your driver waits at every stop.
1Göreme Open Air Museum
The heart of the UNESCO-listed Göreme National Park: a monastic settlement gathered in a single valley. Next to the Apple, Saint Barbara and Snake churches is the Dark Church (separate ticket), whose frescoes have kept their colours best. The Tokalı Church across the road is included in the same ticket and is the largest rock church in the region. Allow 1–1.5 hours; in summer it pays to start the day here before the crowds.
2Uçhisar Castle
A huge natural rock honeycombed with hundreds of rooms – the highest point in the area. From the steps to the top you see Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan, Pigeon Valley and Göreme all at once. If you prefer not to climb, the terraces at its foot give a similar view. The dovecotes cut into the valley walls were used for centuries to collect fertiliser for the vineyards.
3Paşabağ (Monks Valley)
The mushroom-shaped, multi-capped fairy chimneys that define Cappadocia are at their densest here. One of them hides a small chapel and cell thought to have belonged to hermit monks. The secret of these shapes is a cap of harder basalt resting on soft tuff. The paths are short and level, comfortable for children and older travellers.
4Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley)
There are no fairy chimneys here; instead wind and rain have shaped the pink tuff into camels, seals, dolphins and figures holding hands. The most famous is the camel rock beside the road. A short, light-hearted stop – in the afternoon light the rock colours deepen and photos turn out warmer.
5Avanos and the Red River
Turkey's longest river, the Kızılırmak, runs through the middle of town and carries the iron-rich red clay used by the potters. In a workshop you can watch pots thrown on a kick wheel and try it yourself. With its suspension footbridge and old stone houses, Avanos is also a good lunch stop; pottery kebab (testi kebabı) is the local speciality.
6Çavuşin and the Love Valley viewpoint
Above the abandoned cave houses of Çavuşin stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist, one of the oldest known churches in the region. On the way back, a viewpoint over Love Valley (Bağlıdere) shows its tall, slender chimneys from above – the light is best close to sunset.

Volcanoes, monks and rock churches
Millions of years ago the volcanoes Erciyes, Hasan and Göllüdağ covered the region in thick layers of ash that hardened into tuff. Wind, rain and floodwater wore the soft tuff away, while harder pieces of basalt and andesite on top survived like protective hats – this is how the fairy chimneys formed. Because tuff is so easy to carve, people turned the rocks into homes, storerooms, dovecotes and churches.
In the 4th century AD the teachings of Saint Basil of Caesarea (today's Kayseri) spread monastic life through the region. Most churches in the Göreme valley date from the 9th to 12th centuries. During Iconoclasm (726–843), when images were banned, walls were decorated only with crosses and geometric patterns; later centuries filled them with vivid scenes from the life of Christ. The Dark Church receives so little light that its colours survive almost unfaded.
Pottery in Avanos is far older still, reaching back to the Hittites. The iron-rich clay carried by the Kızılırmak still fires to the same brick-red colour today. In 1985 the area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia”.

What is the difference between the Red Tour and the Green Tour?
The Red Tour covers North Cappadocia (Göreme, Uçhisar, Paşabağ, Devrent, Avanos), where the stops are close together. The Green Tour heads south to the Derinkuyu underground city and Ihlara Valley, with longer drives and a 3–4 km valley walk. The most popular plan is the Red Tour on day one and the Green Tour on day two.
Can we change the order of the stops?
Yes. On a private tour the order is completely flexible: start at the museum to beat the crowds, or keep Paşabağ for the evening light. The only condition is that the total time stays within the package you booked.
Is a guide required?
In Turkey only licensed tourist guides may give explanations inside museums and archaeological sites; your driver helps along the way but does not guide inside the museum. The guide rule and fee for this region are shown in the booking form – where a guide is obligatory, the fee is added to the price automatically.
Can we combine it with a balloon flight on the same day?
Yes. Balloons take off at sunrise and most guests are back at their hotel by 08:00–08:30. Starting the Red Tour at 09:30 lets you fit in both. The balloon ticket is not included and is bought from the balloon company.
Can we join from Kayseri?
Yes. Kayseri city centre is about 75 km (one hour) from Göreme. Because the return drive is added to the day, we recommend the 12-hour package and plan the pickup time accordingly.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
The tour price is per vehicle: the package costs the same whether one or six people travel in the van. Only lunch, dinner and hotel accommodation are charged per person. The guide fee is per day and does not depend on the group size.
How do payment and cancellation work?
Nothing is charged online at booking; you pay the driver on the day of the tour in cash (EUR, USD, GBP, TRY) or by card. Free cancellation and date changes; please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
