Tour overview

Antalya and Göreme are about 540 km apart. A same-day return is not possible, so the tour uses a 48-hour package with one night in Cappadocia. The road goes via Akseki and Seydişehir to Konya and then follows the old caravan route via Aksaray to Cappadocia.

On day one the journey itself is part of the programme: the Taurus passes, the Mevlana Museum and lunch in Konya, the Sultanhanı Caravanserai and a sunset in Cappadocia. On day two, those who wish join a balloon flight (paid separately), followed by the Göreme Open Air Museum, Paşabağ, Avanos and Uçhisar; the drive back to Antalya starts in the afternoon.

Your driver stays with you for both days; the driver's accommodation and meals are covered by us. In the booking form you can add hotel accommodation, lunches and dinners and a licensed guide – or arrange your own hotel. The price is the per-vehicle package plus the options you choose.

What you will see

Stops are shown in a typical order; your driver waits at every stop.

1Taurus crossing and Akseki

Heading north from Antalya, the road climbs into the Taurus after Manavgat and passes through the pine and cedar forests of Akseki. You stop for breakfast and watch the coast give way to the Anatolian plateau. You can stop wherever you like along the way.

2Konya and the Mevlana Museum

Konya, capital of Seljuk Turkey, is the city of the 13th-century poet and thinker Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi. The Mevlana Museum, known for its green dome, holds his tomb, manuscripts and objects of the Mevlevi whirling dervishes. For lunch you can try the city's famous etli ekmek or oven-roasted fırın kebabı.

3Sultanhanı Caravanserai

On the Konya–Aksaray road, Sultanhanı was built in 1229 under Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I and is one of the largest caravanserais in Anatolia. Its grand stone portal, the kiosk mosque in the middle of the courtyard and the covered hall where caravans wintered show how Silk Road trade worked.

4Sunset in Cappadocia

You reach Cappadocia in the late afternoon and, before checking in, watch the sunset from the Uçhisar or Red Valley (Kızılçukur) viewpoint. The glowing valleys and distant Mount Erciyes make you forget the long drive. You can spend the night in one of the region's typical cave hotels.

5Göreme Open Air Museum

On the morning of day two you enter the Göreme Open Air Museum before the crowds. Its rock churches, gathered in a single valley and decorated with frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries, are Cappadocia's most important stop. Early in the morning you may also see balloons drifting across the sky.

6Paşabağ, Avanos and Uçhisar

The multi-capped fairy chimneys of Paşabağ, a pottery workshop in Avanos on the Red River and the view from Uçhisar Castle make up Cappadocia's best-known photographs. After lunch the drive back to Antalya begins via Aksaray and Konya.

In the footsteps of the Silk Road: from Konya to Cappadocia

In the 12th and 13th centuries Konya, capital of the Anatolian Seljuk state, stood at the centre of trade routes linking East and West. The Seljuk sultans built caravanserais along them about a day's camel walk apart, where merchants could stay safely, rest their animals and be treated if ill. Sultanhanı is one of the grandest links in that chain.

Born in Balkh and settled in Konya, Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207–1273) is still one of the world's most widely read poets, for his verses on tolerance and love. The sema ceremony of the Mevlevi order founded after his death is on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and the lodge with his tomb has been a museum since the 1920s.

At the eastern end of the caravan route, Cappadocia opens onto a different world of churches, houses and underground cities carved into volcanic tuff. On this tour you cover in a single day the road that caravans took weeks to travel.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 48-hour package needed?

Antalya to Cappadocia takes about 7–8 hours each way. To visit Konya and Sultanhanı on the way and still spend a good half-day in Cappadocia, the tour is planned over two days with one night; you return on the evening of day two.

Is accommodation included?

If you tick “Hotel accommodation” in the form, the per-person nightly rate is added to the total and you stay in a cave hotel in Cappadocia in a double room with breakfast. Leave it unticked if you prefer to arrange your own hotel; your driver's accommodation is covered by us in any case.

Can we do the balloon flight?

Yes. Balloons take off at sunrise on the morning of day two; flights depend on the weather and are paid to the balloon company. After booking we can send you suitable options.

Can we join from Alanya or Kemer?

Yes. From Alanya the route goes via Gündoğmuş–Hadim or Manavgat–Akseki; from Kemer the departure is a little earlier. In both cases the 48-hour package is enough.

Can we stay a second night in Cappadocia?

Yes. For a calmer programme with a second night, message us on WhatsApp and we will prepare a programme and price covering both the Red and Green Tours.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?

The tour price is per vehicle: the package costs the same whether one or six people travel in the van. Only lunch, dinner and hotel accommodation are charged per person. The guide fee is per day and does not depend on the group size.

How do payment and cancellation work?

Nothing is charged online at booking; you pay the driver on the day of the tour in cash (EUR, USD, GBP, TRY) or by card. Free cancellation and date changes; please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
