Tour overview

Antalya's historic centre, Kaleiçi, is a small walled peninsula built around the Roman harbour. Its lanes belong to pedestrians and parking is limited, so your driver drops you at Hadrian's Gate and waits below while you walk down past the Fluted Minaret, the Broken Minaret and Hıdırlık Tower to the harbour.

East of the city the Düden River falls twice: at Upper Düden you walk along a cave-like path behind the curtain of water, while at Lower Düden in Lara it plunges about 40 metres from the cliffs straight into the Mediterranean. To the west, Konyaaltı beach and the Beydağları mountains round off the day.

The tour takes about six hours and works easily from hotels in Lara, Kundu, Konyaaltı and Belek; if you are staying in Kemer or Side, the eight-hour package gives more time for the drive. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

Highlights

  • The triple-arched Hadrian's Gate, built for Emperor Hadrian's visit in AD 130
  • Restored Ottoman houses, the Fluted Minaret and the Roman harbour of Kaleiçi
  • Upper Düden, where you walk behind the water, and Lower Düden falling into the sea
  • The Hall of the Gods at Antalya Museum, filled with statues from Perge
  • Views of the bay and the Beydağları mountains from Hıdırlık Tower
  • Optional: the Tünektepe cable car for a view over the whole city

What you will see

Stops are shown in a typical order; your driver waits at every stop.

1Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar)

Built in honour of Emperor Hadrian's visit in AD 130, the gate is Antalya's most photographed monument. In the stone paving beneath its marble arches you can still see ruts worn by centuries of carts. The walk through Kaleiçi starts here; the car drops you at the gate and collects you at the harbour.

2Kaleiçi lanes and the Fluted Minaret

The narrow lanes of Kaleiçi are lined with timber bay-windowed houses, boutique hotels and courtyard cafés. The city's symbol, the Fluted Minaret (Yivli Minare), was built in brick by the Seljuks in the 13th century; the clock tower next to it is part of the old walls. The Broken Minaret marks a building that was a Roman temple, then a church, then a mosque, before a fire left only its stump.

3Roman harbour and Hıdırlık Tower

Stairs lead down the slope to the harbour, in use since antiquity and now full of excursion boats and fish restaurants. Above it, the round Hıdırlık Tower dates from the 2nd century AD and is one of the best places in the city to watch the sun set over the bay.

4Antalya Museum

One of Turkey's most comprehensive archaeological museums. The Hall of the Gods displays statues of Zeus, Aphrodite and Apollo excavated at Perge, and the sarcophagus hall holds a marble sarcophagus carved with the twelve labours of Heracles. The Weary Heracles statue, returned from the United States in 2011, is here too. Allow at least an hour.

5Upper and Lower Düden Waterfalls

At Upper Düden, in a shady park, a natural cave path behind the falls lets you see the curtain of water from inside. At Lower Düden on the Lara road the river drops about 40 metres into the sea, and the viewing area on the cliffs is ideal for photos. In summer heat both falls are a cool break.

6Konyaaltı and Tünektepe

Konyaaltı beach in the west, with the Beydağları mountains behind it, is Antalya's postcard view. If you like, the Tünektepe cable car takes you up a hill of about 600 metres to see the city, the bay and the mountains in one frame; the cable car ticket is not included.

Sample itinerary

Times are an example; your driver adapts the day to traffic, season and your wishes.

  1. Pickup at your hotel (Lara, Kundu, Konyaaltı or Belek).
  2. Upper Düden Waterfall and the path behind the falls.
  3. Lower Düden Waterfall falling into the sea at Lara.
  4. Hadrian's Gate, then a walk through Kaleiçi: Fluted Minaret, Broken Minaret, Hıdırlık Tower.
  5. Lunch at the Roman harbour (can be included in the price).
  6. Antalya Museum: the Hall of the Gods and the sarcophagi.
  7. Konyaaltı viewpoint or the Tünektepe cable car.
  8. Drive back to your hotel.

From Attaleia to Antalya: a 2,200-year-old harbour city

Antalya was founded in the 2nd century BC by King Attalus II of Pergamon under the name Attaleia. Its value lay in a safe harbour on this stretch of the Mediterranean, and in Roman times it became the trading gateway of Pamphylia. The gate built for Emperor Hadrian, who visited in AD 130, is the best surviving witness to the wealth of that era.

When the Seljuks took the city in 1207, Antalya became one of Anatolia's main gateways to the sea; the Fluted Minaret and the medreses date from this period. In Ottoman times the timber houses inside the walls were built with high ceilings and bay windows to stay cool in summer. Kaleiçi's character today comes largely from these houses, protected by restoration work since the 1970s.

The Düden River shapes the city's geography: water from the Taurus foothills disappears into the limestone and reappears, finally falling from the cliffs of Lara into the sea. This travertine plateau explains why Antalya is known as the city on the cliffs.

  • Tickets for Antalya Museum and the Tünektepe cable car are not included; current museum fees are on muze.gov.tr.
  • From June to September midday temperatures can pass 35°C – we put the museum at the hottest hour and the waterfalls in the morning.
  • One-hour boat trips from the harbour sail along the coast to Lower Düden; you can add one to the day (paid on board).
  • You can also start in the afternoon and watch the sunset from Hıdırlık Tower; the museum is then visited before it closes.

Who is it for?

Ideal for guests staying in Antalya who have never seen the city, families with children, first-time visitors and anyone with only half a day to spare. Walks are short, with no long mountain or ancient-site hikes.

A guide is optional. Without one, your driver takes you to each stop, waits and helps along the way, but does not give tours inside museums and sites. For in-depth explanations, tick the guide in the form.

Frequently asked questions

Can the car drive into Kaleiçi?

Kaleiçi's lanes are very narrow and mostly pedestrian. Your driver drops you at Hadrian's Gate or Kalekapısı and picks you up above the harbour, or wherever you agree, when your walk is over.

Can I join from a hotel in Belek or Kemer?

Yes. Belek is about 40 km away and the six-hour package is enough. From Kemer and Side the drive is longer, so we recommend the eight-hour package.

Is the boat trip included?

No. Boats from the Roman harbour sail to Lower Düden and back in about an hour; tickets are bought on board. If you want to add one, your driver waits for you at the harbour.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes – walks are short, and the waterfalls are cool and shady. Ice cream and café breaks in Kaleiçi are easy. Cobblestones are hard on pushchairs; a baby carrier is more practical.

Can it be done as a sunset tour?

Yes. Start around 13:00–14:00, see the museum first, then Düden, and end the day at Hıdırlık Tower at sunset. You can choose any pickup time in the form.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?

The tour price is per vehicle: the package costs the same whether one or six people travel in the van. Only lunch, dinner and hotel accommodation are charged per person. The guide fee is per day and does not depend on the group size.

How do payment and cancellation work?

Nothing is charged online at booking; you pay the driver on the day of the tour in cash (EUR, USD, GBP, TRY) or by card. Free cancellation and date changes; please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
