Pamukkale & Hierapolis Tour: White Travertines and an Ancient Spa City

Pamukkale is one of Turkey's best-known natural wonders: hot water flowing down the hillside leaves calcium behind and coats the mountain in layer upon layer of white terraces. Your driver collects you from your hotel early in the morning; you walk barefoot on the travertines, explore the ancient city of Hierapolis on top and, if you like, swim in a warm pool among Roman columns.

Tour overview

Pamukkale lies 20 km north of Denizli and is about a 3–4 hour drive from almost every holiday area on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. The tour therefore uses a twelve-hour package: an early start, arrival towards midday, 4–5 hours on site and a return in the evening.

On group tours the coach stops first at carpet and textile shops and time on the travertines is short. On a private tour you drive straight to the gate, start at the necropolis of Hierapolis, continue to the theatre and walk down to the travertines – adjusting the day to the crowds and the light.

The tour can start from hotels in Antalya, Lara, Belek, Kemer, Izmir, Selçuk, Kusadasi, Bodrum, Dalyan, Fethiye and Marmaris; pickup is between 06:00 and 07:30 depending on the area. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

Highlights

  • A barefoot walk on white travertines with warm water flowing over them

  • The Gate of Pluto and the Martyrium of St Philip
  • Optional: a swim among fallen columns in the Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool)
  • A natural and cultural site on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988

What you will see

Stops are shown in a typical order; your driver waits at every stop.

1Necropolis of Hierapolis and Frontinus Street

Entering by the north gate, you pass hundreds of sarcophagi, tumuli and house-shaped tombs on both sides of the road – the necropolis of Hierapolis is one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia. Many of those buried here had come to the city for healing. After the cemetery you pass through the Gate of Domitian onto Frontinus Street, the city's main avenue.

2Theatre of Hierapolis

Set into the hillside, the theatre dates from the 2nd century and has been restored with its carved stage building. From the upper rows you look over the Çürüksu valley to the mountains beyond. It can be hot here in summer; morning or late afternoon is more pleasant.

3Gate of Pluto and Martyrium of St Philip

In antiquity the Ploutonion was considered a gateway to the underworld – a sanctuary in front of a cave that releases toxic gas, where sacrificial animals were said to die. At the top of the city stands the octagonal Martyrium, built where Philip, one of the apostles of Jesus, is said to have been martyred.

4Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool)

Marble columns that fell into the pool in an earthquake lie in warm thermal water, about 35°C all year round. Entry to the pool requires a separate ticket; if you don't want to swim, you can watch from the café beside it.

5The travertines

As the calcium-rich hot water flows down the slope it loses carbon dioxide and deposits lime, forming stepped white pools. To protect them, shoes are not allowed: you walk barefoot downhill through the warm water. At sunset the white surface turns pink and orange.

6Hierapolis Archaeological Museum

Housed in a Roman bath, the museum displays sarcophagi, statues and reliefs from Hierapolis and nearby cities such as Laodicea and Tripolis. A short visit completes the story of the city you have just walked through.

Sample itinerary

Times are an example; your driver adapts the day to traffic, season and your wishes.

  1. Pickup at your hotel (Antalya example; Izmir/Kusadasi around 07:00, Bodrum and Fethiye around 06:00).
  2. Breakfast stop on the way.
  3. North gate: necropolis, Gate of Domitian and Frontinus Street.
  4. Theatre of Hierapolis and Gate of Pluto; walk up to the Martyrium if you like.
  5. Lunch (can be included in the price).
  6. Antique Pool (optional) and the archaeological museum.
  7. Barefoot walk on the travertines.
  8. Drive back; arrival in Antalya around 19:30.

How Pamukkale formed, and why Hierapolis was built here

Hot water rising from the fault line beneath Pamukkale picks up calcium bicarbonate underground. As it surfaces and flows down the slope, carbon dioxide escapes into the air and the lime settles as a white crust. Over thousands of years these layers built up into the roughly 160-metre-high white slope you see today. To keep the terraces alive, the water is channelled to different sections in rotation.

Hierapolis was founded at the head of these healing waters by the kingdom of Pergamon in the 2nd century BC. In Roman times it grew into a thermal spa: baths, pools and guesthouses were the backbone of its economy. Because so many visitors who came hoping for a cure died here, the necropolis spread over an area larger than the city itself.

In Christian history Hierapolis is important as the place where the apostle Philip was martyred; in 2011 Italian archaeologists found a tomb near the martyrium believed to be his. The city was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes and abandoned, and in 1988 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Pamukkale.

Practical tips

  • The site ticket and the Antique Pool are paid separately and are not included; current fees are on muze.gov.tr.
  • Shoes are not allowed on the travertines; bring a small bag to carry them and a towel to dry your feet.
  • The white travertines reflect the sun strongly: sunglasses and sunscreen are a must.
  • Bring a swimsuit for the Antique Pool; there are changing cabins and lockers.
  • In winter the water on the travertines can be cold – thick socks help warm your feet afterwards.

Who is it for?

Suits nature and history lovers, photographers and anyone who wants to see one of Turkey's iconic landscapes. As the drive is long, we add more breaks for families with small children. The travertine walk can be slippery; guests with limited mobility can enjoy the upper terraces from the viewpoints.

A guide is optional. Without one, your driver takes you to each stop, waits and helps along the way, but does not give tours inside museums and sites. For in-depth explanations, tick the guide in the form.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really walk barefoot on the travertines?

Yes. Shoes are banned to protect the travertines; you walk barefoot along the marked path through warm water. The surface is rough in places and slippery in others – just walk slowly.

Is Cleopatra's Pool included?

No, the Antique Pool has its own ticket, paid at the entrance. Swimming is optional; you can also see the pool from the café beside it.

Which areas can we join from, and how early is pickup?

Pickup is around 06:00–06:30 from Antalya and the surrounding resorts, around 07:00 from Izmir, Selçuk and Kusadasi, and around 06:00 from Bodrum, Dalyan, Fethiye and Marmaris. We confirm the exact time for your accommodation after booking.

Is one day enough, or should we stay overnight?

One day is enough, but it is a long drive. For a calmer pace, choose the 24- or 36-hour package and stay at a thermal hotel in Karahayıt, enjoying sunset and the quiet morning on the travertines; you can add the hotel in the form.

Can we also see Laodicea?

Yes. Ten kilometres from Pamukkale, Laodicea is a large ancient city that was home to one of the seven churches of the Book of Revelation. It adds about an hour; we can stop on the way back.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?

The tour price is per vehicle: the package costs the same whether one or six people travel in the van. Only lunch, dinner and hotel accommodation are charged per person. The guide fee is per day and does not depend on the group size.

How do payment and cancellation work?

Nothing is charged online at booking; you pay the driver on the day of the tour in cash (EUR, USD, GBP, TRY) or by card. Free cancellation and date changes; please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
