About Grand Hotel de Londres
The Grand Hotel de Londres, known in Turkish as Büyük Londra Oteli, stands at No:53 Meşrutiyet Caddesi in Pera, the Beyoğlu street that runs parallel to İstiklal Avenue on the slope above the Golden Horn. It was one of the early Pera hotels opened after the Orient Express began bringing travellers to Istanbul, and it has been renovated over the years while keeping its early-1900s atmosphere. Galata Tower is less than a kilometre to the south and Taksim Square about a kilometre to the north-east.
Istanbul Airport is on the hotel's side of the Bosphorus. The motorway runs south past Göktürk and Kemerburgaz to Kağıthane, and from there city streets lead down into Beyoğlu; the last turn is from Tarlabaşı Boulevard into Meşrutiyet Caddesi at Tepebaşı. Unlike İstiklal Avenue one street east, which is closed to cars, Meşrutiyet Caddesi carries traffic, so the car can stop at the hotel door.
The building went up in 1892 under the name Belle Vue. Two of today's room types are called Agatha Christie and Orient Express, alongside standard rooms and rooms with a balcony facing the Golden Horn. The Terrace Bar, which overlooks the Golden Horn and holds about 200 people, opens in the warmer months and closes in winter, when the Lobby Bar with room for about 60 becomes the meeting place; the buffet breakfast is served downstairs from the lobby.
