Karaköy's waterfront, where the Galataport cruise terminal and Istanbul Modern now stand, is home to JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus, the first JW Marriott in the city when it opened. Its entrance is at Kemankeş Caddesi No:49/8 in the Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa quarter, a few steps from the quay, with a second door at the back on Mumhane Caddesi. Galata Tower stands about 450 m to the west at the top of the slope, and the Karaköy tram stop and the lower station of the historic Tünel funicular are a few minutes away on foot.
From Istanbul Airport the drive stays on the European side: south past Göktürk and Kemerburgaz to Kağıthane, through the Kağıthane–Piyalepaşa tunnel and down to Kasımpaşa, then along the Golden Horn shore to Karaköy. The last few hundred metres wind through the narrow, busy streets around Karaköy Square; the hotel has no car park of its own, and valets take cars to an off-site one.
The hotel occupies Veli Alemdar Han, a han of about 180 years designed by Italian architects for foreign shipping merchants and long used as a business centre; at the heart of the restored building is a 35 m atrium. There are 130 rooms and suites on nine floors, many facing the Bosphorus or the Old City. OCTO on the ninth floor serves seafood and mezes, IOKI Nau cooks Nikkei dishes, and Sky Karaköy on the roof opens from May to November with a pool and a bar. Spa Soul has Turkish hammams.
